The More You Do It, The More You Dream It
Apr. 27th, 2009 03:28 pmLast night I had a dream that I started a new comic. I think I started it with Aaron again cause he was really annoyed about all the drawing styles involved. But it totally made sense because...
The comic was about a coalition of webcomic characters unionizing over some outrage in the cyberworld. I'm not too clear on the details. So there was art from all sorts of recognizable comics. There was T-Rex and Tycho, sitting down with characters from PvP and Questionable Content, and in walks a stick figure in a hat....
But there was also a lot of guest art and lots of little start up comics that wanted cameos cooperated... it was good times.

sidhe_etain, you always inspire me to create beauty around myself! Which then inspires me to do other beautiful things! So this is the little corner of my desk I cleaned off and made lovely.
Book Angel
Apr. 23rd, 2009 10:00 pmSeveral weeks ago,
lisa_schroeder offered up copies of her book, Far From You, to people who were willing to give them away to friends who were down and needed a pick up in the form of a brand new, signed book. I entered the drawing, knowing that my good friend Sheila loves books and knowing that she's been struggling with balance and migraine problems, taking care of her kids while her husband is working a state away, and not getting to do fun things like go to the bookstore for a treat.
Well, Lisa picked my entry and shortly after I found myself in possession of a copy signed specially for Sheila.

Over the next week or so, I gathered and put together things that I thought would cheer Sheila up, bring a smile to her face, or just be things that she could enjoy--off by herself for a few minutes, or with her kids. And I must say, the care package turned out pretty nice:

( Detail pictures on a few items... )
Then I wrapped it all up in some spring colors and took it off the post office.

Right after I sent the package, this is what Sheila blogged:
So more than a week ago I started with a toothache. I have all my wisdom teeth still so that happens. I'm just dental phobic and terrified of getting anything pulled while I'm awake (can't get put to sleep). So it got worse and worse so I finally got it checked when I started feeling very very sick and my face swelled up. Two of my wisdom teeth were infected. My dentist didn't want to mess with switching my antibiotics so he sent me to my doctor. In the mean time I ended up in urgent care for being severly dehydrated. Then the next night my heart went out of control and I had to call 911 and spend the night at the hospital. Back to the dentist and doctor, and then rushed to an oral surgeon Friday. The infection spread into my face and jaw. So they pulled the worst wisdom tooth on the spot. I have a possible bleeding disorder so they wouldn't do more than one and I got halfway home, and had to turn around and go back and sit there all afternoon to keep getting checked cause the bleeding wouldn't stop. Third antibiotic later and I think I'm finally clearing up! It's making me really sick but it's kicking the infection.
Well, after reading that, I was feeling pretty good about the timing of the whole thing. I let her know I'd sent her something and to let me know when she got it, and I was pretty thrilled to get this email a day or two later:
hey, i got your package!!! oh my gosh it was like christmas!!!
i was sitting here feeling sick and all doped up and upset, i was too sick to sleep much last night and just miserable and that cheered me up so much. wait til tiffany gets home. lol.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
you are the best. :)
Sheila, I'm glad it helped! That was the idea, after all.
Lisa, thanks for the opportunity to brighten someone's day. (Sorry it took me so long to get the blog together!)

Earth Week!
Apr. 23rd, 2009 02:53 pmThat's right, it's still Earth week. In fact if you take it literally it is always Earth week; every day is Earth day because, well, where else are you going to go? Until I see you camping out on Mars you might as well just get on the Earth day train.
You are here:

My mom put a coffee shop into her library. There's a $.25 discount on any drink if you bring your own cup. Earth friendly!
And some things that you can buy that are better for the planet than that stuff you normally buy:

other harmful ingredients.
If you're looking for sustainably produced furniture, natural textiles, hemp twine, or eco-fashion, take a look at Earth Friendly Goods.
So enjoy your planet!

Happy Earth Day!
Apr. 22nd, 2009 11:09 amNo Earth Day would be complete without a viewing of Tim Minchin's Canvas Bags anthem:
And if you don't want to be green just today, check out the
green_daily community (just in case you missed it on the LJ spotlight this week) for ideas and information for living, well, green daily. For example:

Apr. 21st, 2009 01:01 pmYeah, let's just call it Earth Week! One day isn't enough! So make sure to turn out the lights when you aren't in the room!
This one is for the folks in Kansas, although check around, your state might be doing something similar!

Appliance Roundup to Help Families Give "Energy Hogs" the Boot--New Statewide Initiative to Reduce Energy Consumption, Lower Utility Costs for Homeowners and Renters--
Topeka, KS - Helping Kansas families cut energy consumption and reduce utility costs is the goal of a new statewide initiative launched by Kansas Housing Resources Corporation (KHRC). The Residential Appliance
Replacement Program allows income-eligible homeowners and renters to replace old, energy-hungry and unsafe appliances with new, energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly models.
"Installing energy-efficient appliances is one of the best ways to lower a household's energy costs," said Gary Allsup, KHRC Executive Director. "Kansas Housing is pleased to help families save both energy and money."
Cost savings from replacing outdated appliances can be substantial. While exact energy use depends on the particular model number, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that simply replacing a 20-year-old refrigerator with an ENERGY STAR qualified model will save roughly 700 kWh of electricity or more annually.
A total of $4 million in Low-Income Energy Assistance monies is available to fund the appliance replacement program. Financial assistance is available on a first-come, first serve basis. The program begins immediately; however, once funding runs out, the program will end.
To be eligible for the program, the applicant household's Adjusted Gross Income must not exceed 75 percent of the state median income. Income guidelines are as follows:
INCOME RESTRICTIONS
1 person_____$27,247
2 persons____$35,630
3 persons____$44,014
4 persons____$52,397
KHRC will review applications for program eligibility and certify that the applicant's household income meets program guidelines.
Appliances eligible for replacement include refrigerators, water heaters, heating and cooling systems and window air units. The appliance to be replaced must be at least 10 years old. Applicants must be a Kansas resident and the household where the work is completed must be within the state of Kansas. The property to be assisted must be the applicant's primary residence. Renters may qualify by having landowners complete a simple Property Owner Consent Form.
Anyone interested in applying for the program may download an application form through KHRC's website at www.kshousingcorp.org or they may call 1-785-291-3282.
Though any retailer may accept vouchers and participate in this program, a list of the participating vendors is available on KHRC's website and will be updated periodically as new vendors sign on. A step-by-step explanation of how the program operates is also available on KHRC's website or by calling the number listed above.
Note: Retailers participating in the program must deliver and install the selected new energy-efficient appliance, plus properly dispose of the old unit. If you're a retailer and would like to participate in the program, please call 785-296-7912 for details. Women and minority business owners and contractors are encouraged to apply.

Earth Week!
Apr. 20th, 2009 12:21 pmHey in case you forgot, Earth Day is April 22nd! That means it's Earth Week! So let's make a big deal of it for once instead of letting it slip by unnoticed again... at least this week: recycle, turn off some lights, walk somewhere instead of driving!
You can calculate your global footprint here:

Ack, if everyone lived like me it would take 4.3 planets to support the current population? Guess I should buy local more often. AND SO SHOULD YOU.

I Don't Think This Was Well Thought Out
Apr. 14th, 2009 12:58 pmI heard a snippet about the Republican protest movement this morning on the radio, and took a moment to privately snigger over the term they're using, but they didn't remark upon the chosen appellation at the time.
However, this made it all that much funnier:
This makes my whole day! Thanks, Republicans!
